Fate...

The bed stood against the wall, beneath the window through which we watched the stars--the snow falling softly in the night.  Sheets still crumpled and smelling of our final love.  His scent lingered on the pillow where I laid my head, mingling with salty tears that fell.  How could this have happened?  Our love was to last forever.  What fate had brought me here?  The sheets were warmer not so long ago as we lay tangled in their midst.  While dreams were spoken and plans were made.  Oh, Fate, you angry bitch, how could you take him?  What would I do without his touch, his kiss, his love?

  1. Fate is a cruel "other woman"! You have revived the classical lost love in a very unique way..nicely done!

  2. Lost love is always sad and as sounbdoffreedom said, classical. If you live long enough and stay open to love, it finds you again and fate wears a kinder face! :-)

  5. I sincerely hope this story was a story and not bitter experience. To judge by what you say in your profile, you are a long way away from being deserted. Hope fate stays kind to you.

  6. You know, I really like this. Writing that can be blunt and poetic at the same time is far too uncommon these days.

    Bravo.

  10. Dear Connie,

Love is the most powerful memory of all. And captured here so poignantly.

  11. In a few sentences and in a tiny place(bed), you've included the major themes of life: man, woman, Love, Loss (by betrayal or death).

This passage reveals your great gift in telling a story.

  12. Simply put but great resonance. I'm a widow and clearly feel like this often. Very succinct and heartfelt.

  16. Fate takes from us in many ways, bringing forth many emotions. Anger, sadness, despair. You put them into words that paint a picture.
