The Early Bird...

Saturday is booked, so I have to post early for the Sepia Saturday entry.  I love all the wonderful photos everyone is sharing.  So many wonderful memories.  Today I'm posting a photo of the main street of Riverton, Iowa, a very small town located in the southwest corner of Iowa in the County of Fremont.  This is the town where I spent the first four years of my life.  It was pretty much deserted by that time, but a few strong souls remained.  I remember the grocery store, a wonderful old bank complete with beautiful solid oak cabinetry housing intricate iron grills through which people made their deposits and withdrawals.  There was also a post office, a hardware store, a saddle shop, a beauty shop, a soda shop and a theatre.  Life was good.  I still remember walking barefoot in the grass as a little girl.  I know times were hard for my working class family, but I only remember the beautiful, happy days.

  1. It sure reminds me of my little home town in Romania when I was at your age. I especially remember the soda shop because I liked to drink soda ( like it to this day)and the daughter of the shop owner went with me to the same kindergarten.

Photos like this one , always stir up nostalgic emotions.

  5. Oh, it does indeed stir up nostalgia. It's sad to see these small towns decline. There's something so homey and comforting about dogs meandering in the middle of the road on Main St.

  7. I have happy, beautiful memories of the days spent with my grandparents in a tiny Indiana town. Treasures, aren't they? Super photo of early America. Most towns looked just this way, a little on the dusty side!
